Why I Did NOT Have Gastric Bypass Surgery
This is by far one of the questions that I get asked most often. These days, when I share with people that I lost 150 pounds, they just assume that I elected to have my stomach stapled, or have one of the various other operations available performed.
That I did not have surgery puts me in a different category of weight loss success stories. I lost weight the old fashioned way, through diet and exercise. I also prayed a lot! I never used any diet supplements either.
During that years that I was obese I never realized there was a surgery available for obesity. Thirteen years ago there weren’t shows on television about 1,000 pound men, or entire television series that revolve around gastric bypass surgeons. These days if you are a fan of the Discovery Health channel there are an abundance of those shows, which I do love to watch.
What I don’t love is the fact that these poor people are resorting to drastic surgery in an attempt to “cure” their obesity. I understand the desperation and hopeless feeling that some of those overweight people feel, because I was there. It’s not easy to be obese. The physical and emotional pain of obesity can be overwhelming. It must be very tempting to have a surgery that claims to instantly fix your problem.
I’m so glad that I didn’t have the knowledge or the opportunity to have surgery. In researching the long term results of those procedures I find it disheartening that a substantial percentage of patients regain a lot of the weight they lost. Another percentage struggle with nutritional deficiencies their whole lives. I am so grateful that I don’t have those issues to worry about.
I’m not a doctor, and I certainly don’t intend to replace any doctor’s medical advice. However, if possible, I would encourage you to try again to lose weight the old fashioned way. I am living proof that you can lose a substantial amount of weight by strictly monitoring your fat percentage, portion sizes and exercise.
Surgery is always a serious undertaking. Changing the process by which your body digests and absorbs food is a huge issue. Gastric bypass surgery is an extreme solution to a problem that can be solved in other ways. I’m not saying it’s easy to lose weight. I am saying that there is no magic pill – nor is there any magic surgery.
