If your family loves apple pie but you hate to make them or are trying to save a few calories, baked apple slices are a terrific alternative.
My boys (and girls) love to make baked apple slices. It’s so simple they can do it themselves with a minimum of supervision. Of course they do not cut anything – they use my vintage Pampered Chef apple slicer that I got when I used to sell Pampered Chef. That thing must be at least 15 years old and it is still going strong.
The apple slices are dead simple to make. They take less than an hour start to finish and are delicious served alone. We serve ours in small bowls and never get any complaints.
They could be served with ice cream or homemade whipping cream but to be honest with you – they just don’t need it. And if you are trying to diet, you probably don’t either! 🙂 Here is the recipe:
Healthy and Simple Baked Apple Slices
|Prep time||10 minutes|
|Cook time||30 minutes|
|Total time||40 minutes|
- 4 Large Apples (Granny Smith, Jonagold, or whatever you have)
- 2 teaspoons Cinnamon
- 1 dash Nutmeg
- 1/4 cup Succanat or Brown Sugar
- 1/2 cup Water or Apple Juice (I always use water)
- 2 tablespoons Butter
|Peel, core, and slice the apples. Save the peels for compost or as a homemade potpourri.|
|Place the apples in a baking dish.|
|Sprinkle the spices and sugar over the apples. Next, pour the water or juice over the apples. Using a spoon or your hands, toss the apples until they are coated in cinnamon and uniformly wet from the water or juice.|
|Dot with butter.|
|Baked, uncovered, for about 30 to 45 minutes. The thinner your apples, the shorter cooking time they require.|
I hope you enjoy these baked apple slices – let me know if you have any questions. Diane
